Privacy Policy

Effective August 3, 2026 · what changed

The short version: GoodSeed collects the minimum needed to run a family chore-and-rewards app. We don't run ads, we don't use tracking or analytics, we never sell data, and parents can delete everything at any time. Kids can't sign up on their own — a parent always creates and controls the family. In classrooms and teams, the school or program is the gatekeeper, and a child's roster entry is just a first name.

What GoodSeed is

GoodSeed is a faith-based chore, character & rewards web app. Parents create a family, add child profiles, assign tasks, and approve rewards. Coaches and teachers can run a points roster for a team or classroom (GoodSeed Teams), and a church, school, or district can cover many such groups under one agreement (GoodSeed for Organizations). This policy explains what information we handle, why, and the choices you have. It applies to the app and the website at goodseedkids.com.

Information we collect

From parents, coaches & teachers

Your name and an optional email address.
A family or group name and an invite code used to connect your devices.
If you subscribe to GoodSeed Plus or Teams: payment is processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card number — Stripe sends us only your subscription status. Organization billing contacts give us a name and billing email for invoicing.
If you subscribe your calendar to an outside calendar feed (for example a school's published calendar), we store that feed's address in your settings and fetch the feed through our server so it can appear on your GoodSeed calendar.

About children (added by a parent, or by a coach/teacher for their roster)

A first name or nickname and, for family profiles, an optional age.
An avatar — an emoji, or an optional photo if the parent chooses to add one.
App activity: tasks completed, Seeds/points earned and spent, streaks, levels, badges, and any notes a child attaches (for example a task note, a gratitude entry, or an optional photo showing a finished chore).

About photos, specifically

Avatar photos and task-proof photos are optional, are added by your family, and sync to our database only if your family or group uses cloud sync.
Roster photos (a coach putting faces to names) and photo-frame photos (the kitchen-board slideshow) are stored only on that device — they never enter our database at all.

What we do NOT collect

No child email addresses, phone numbers, or passwords — children sign in with the family code.
No location data, contact lists, or browsing history.
No advertising identifiers, analytics trackers, or third-party cookies. There are no ads in GoodSeed.

Where your data lives

On your device. GoodSeed is local-first: your family's data is stored in your browser on your own device.
In our database (families and groups with cloud sync). Plus families, Teams groups, and organization-covered groups sync through our database (hosted by Supabase in the United States) so every device stays up to date. Access is restricted so only devices that have joined your family or group with your invite code can read its data.

How we use information

Only to provide GoodSeed: running the app, syncing your family's devices, processing Plus subscriptions, and responding when you contact us. We do not sell personal information, share it for advertising, or use it to build profiles. Ever.

Children's privacy (COPPA)

GoodSeed is designed for families with children, so we take the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act seriously:

An adult is always the gatekeeper. A child cannot create an account. A child profile is created either by a parent in their own family, or by a coach/teacher on a roster their school or program has authorized (see the next section). Only that adult can share the code that lets a child's device join.
We collect the minimum. A child's profile needs only a first name or nickname. Age and photo are optional and added only by a parent.
No ads or tracking for anyone, children included.
Parents can review and delete. You can view and edit every child profile in the app, delete an individual child profile, or delete the entire family — which permanently removes your family's data from the device and from our database.
Third parties are limited to infrastructure: Supabase (database hosting), Netlify (website hosting), and Stripe (parent payments only). None of them receive children's data for their own use.

Teams, classrooms & organizations (schools)

When GoodSeed is used by a team, classroom, church group, or school, a coach or teacher (a "leader") runs a roster instead of a family. Here is exactly how that works:

What a leader adds: a child's first name or nickname — nothing else is required. Roster photos, if a leader uses them, stay only on the leader's own device and never enter our database.
Consent in a school setting. Where a school or program directs children's use of GoodSeed, the school may provide consent on parents' behalf as permitted by COPPA, and GoodSeed handles student information solely to provide the service on the school's behalf — consistent with FERPA's school-official approach. We use student information for no other purpose, and we never use it for advertising or profiling.
What an organization administrator can see: a read-only roll-up of its own covered groups — group names, leader names, each roster's first names, and point totals. Nothing from private families.
Connecting home and team is the parent's choice. A child's group points reach their family's app only when the parent enters a code — either the child's own GoodSeed code or a share code the leader gives the parent. These views are read-only, and parents can also choose to review a group's calendar events before they appear at home.
Deletion: a leader removing a child from the roster removes that child's group data; a leader deleting the group, or an organization ending its agreement and requesting deletion, removes it entirely. Student-data deletion requests from a school are honored promptly.
Student data privacy agreements: we're glad to review and sign a district's data privacy agreement (for example the SDPC national or state NDPA). Email us.

Data retention and deletion

Your family's or group's data is kept while you use GoodSeed.
Deleting a child profile removes that child's data. Deleting the family or group (Settings → Delete) permanently removes its data from your device and our database.
If a subscription or organization agreement lapses, data is not deleted — the family or group simply returns to the Free plan's limits, and you can delete it yourself at any time.
Routine database backups age out automatically within approximately 7 days.
Subscription and payment records are retained by Stripe as required for financial and legal record-keeping.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest. Database access is controlled by per-family membership rules enforced by the database itself, so one family can never read another family's data.

Changes to this policy

If we make meaningful changes we'll update this page and the effective date, and note the change in the app.

August 3, 2026: Added the Teams, classrooms & organizations section now that those plans are live (school consent, what leaders and org administrators see, student-data deletion, DPAs); clarified which photos sync and which never leave the device; covered subscribed calendar feeds; removed the retired waitlist.
